2024 Annual Report - Flipbook - Page 12
Benny was discovered
hiding out in the windowsill of a local motel, exhausted from
trying to 昀椀nd his way
out of the room.
When juvenile bats
start learning to 昀氀y,
they oven explore
cracks and crevices,
and some}mes wind
up trapped inside of
buildings. This was the
fate of li琀琀le Benny,
but thankfully he was
spo琀琀ed before he
succumbed to dehydra}on. A few injec}ons of warmed electrolytes and a good
meal later, he was feeling much be琀琀er and making full use of our 昀氀ight enclosure. Two days later Benny was able to 昀氀y o昀昀 into the night to hunt for insects
like moths, 昀氀ying ants and beetles.

Despite being able to swim
(as with most bats), that
wasn’t Graham’s inten}on
on the day he was found.
Likely having dipped down
while in 昀氀ight for a quick
drink of water, he miscalculated his trajectory and
wound up treading water
to exhaus}on un}l someone no}ced him. He was
scooped out of the water
with a 昀氀ip-昀氀op and placed
in the only thing the 昀椀nder
had handy at the }me–a
graham cracker box. The
昀椀nder then drove a
soaked, very upset li琀琀le Graham, to Bat World for care. He was uninjured, but our
caregivers discovered he seemed to have limited use of his thumbs, which makes
it di昀케cult for him to hang and groom properly. We suspect his thumbs may have
been damaged in his ini}al a琀琀empts to climb the concrete walls of the pool. Graham will stay with us because of this disability, receiving life}me care.
